Our National Heroes.

On the last Monday of August, the Filipinos the Cry of Pugad Lawin as a pivotal moment in the Filipino independence movement as a revolt that kicked off the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Spanish Empire and the long struggle toward that country’s independence. It is a day to honor the bravery of all Filipino heroes who struggled for the nation's freedom, including those who vanished into anonymity.

Why do we celebrate National Heroes Day?

1. National Heroes Day reminds us to be grateful for the life we have today. Freedom comes at a cost of other’s sacrifices. - For the Philippines, the long and painful road to independence is paved with the losses of many historic heroes.
   
   
2. As Heroes day is a national holiday, it spares us some time to  be with our family.- On this special day, it’s a great opportunity to take the time off to spend quality time with our family and friends. It is a meaningful way of celebrating the occasion.

   If you don’t know much about the history in the Philippines, this is the chance to educate ourselves. Take some time on National Heroes Day to learn more about the Philippines and its journey to independence.

How to observe National Heroes Day.

1.  Visit a veteran’s memorial: Whether or not you have loved ones who served in the military, you can take a moment to visit a public war memorial and pay your respects to veterans who fought for freedom and independence in the country.
   
   
2. Attend a parade: National parades are commonly celebrated with parades in most Filipino towns. Spend the day exposing yourself to the local culture.
   
   
3. Spend time with family: Use the time to connect with your family. Enjoy a day at a local park or attraction you haven’t gotten around to visiting.

Although National Heroes Day is a day we pay our respects to the veterans who fought for the country, it is also a day for us to show our appreciation to our heroes; especially during these hard times as our front-liners are fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic. Without our doctors and nurses, the future would be unclear and we must thank them for all they are doing to prevent the worst from becoming a reality.
