Our home country of Philippines is a place steeped in culture, symbolisms, and visual representations of deeper concepts and meanings. Even everyday things such as flowers hold hidden meanings. This month, we’re looking at the birth flower by date – specifically, the flower of the month of July. July is privileged to have two birth month flowers – the Larkspur and Water Lily. We at Flower Chimp have chosen to talk about the Water Lily thanks to its unique and amphibious nature.

The Water Lily, like the name suggests, is an aquatic plant with large floating leaves called Lily Pads. Lily Pads can expand up to two meters in diameter, covering vast areas of the pond or lake in which the plant grows. Each leaf contains little pockets of air that keep the plant buoyant throughout its lifespan. Much like the lotus flower, the water lily’s flower peeks out from the surface of the water when it blooms.

Why The Flower of July?

All this info is great, but why exactly is the Water Lily the flower of the month of July? The Nymphaea Water Lily is a symbol of innocence, purity, peace, and fertility. Naturally, those born in the month of July will have personality traits and characteristics that personify the water lily’s symbolism. At least that’s what we would like to think. *Wink Wink*

Types of Water Lilies

There are approximately 60 varieties of water lily species worldwide. Classification of water lilies is determined by these features:

  • Flower features
  • Leaf size
  • Flower colors
  • Propagation method

The most common of the water lilies are the purple, white, yellow, and pink varieties.
